Revelation 19:5-16


THE GLORIOUS COMING OF JESUS



  I. Great event in prophecy - appearing of the Messiah.

     A. Jews thought this was only way Messiah could return.


     B. Fulfills all OT prophecies not accomplished at first coming.


II. He comes to judge the earth.

     A. Mean?  He rules with iron scepter.

         1) Image of judgment, fulfillment of Psalm 2:9.


     B. He judges with justice.                            Rev 19:11

         1) Fair.

         2) No loopholes.

         3) We get what we deserve.

         4) Insightful - he sees right through us.         Rev 19:12


     C. He comes to make war.                              Rev 19:11

         1) Same thing as bringing justice.

         2) War is waged by his Word, not by actual fighting.


     D. Robe stained in blood.                             Rev 19:13

         1) Stained, but no battle yet.

         2) Jesus' own blood?

         3) Blood of his enemies?

         4) Better - signifies Jesus' execution of judgment  Isa 63:2


     E. He comes with the wrath of God.                    Rev 19:15

         1) Winepress - vivid image.

         2) We are for him or against him - no middle ground.


III. He comes to claim the earth.

     A. Lord's Prayer:  God's will done on earth as in heaven.


     B. He inherits earth he created.


     C. He gains political control over nations.     Rev 19:15

         1) Rightful title:  King of kings and Lord of Lords. Rev 19:16

         2) Only ruler who deserves worship, though many claim it.


IV. His coming is glorious.

     A. On clouds.

         1) OT prophecy - Dan 7:13

         2) Quoted by Jesus at trial.              Mark 14:62


     B. Evident to world

         1) All will see him.

             a) How?  Not important.

         2) Jesus - when they see me they will mourn.       Matt 24:30


     C. Coming is literal.

         1) Acts 1 - just as you have seen him go up.

         2) (Gospel of John - sometimes spiritualizes concept, but not

              always.  Futurism still there.)


     D. His splendor will burn up enemies.          2 Thess 1:7-8, 2:8


     E. Much different than first coming - nothing desirable about him.

         1) How often do we associate our faith with splendor?


V. He comes with his saints.

     A. Made decisions for Jesus.


     B. Lived for Jesus - marked by righteous acts.  Rev 19:8, 19:14


     C. Were resurrected/raptured.


     D. Join Jesus for assault on earth.


VI. He defeats evil.

     A. No actual battle described.


     B. Decisive action - word uttered by Jesus.

         1) His name is "The Word of God."                 Rev 19:13

         2) Sharp sword out of mouth strikes nations.      Rev 19:15

         3) His breath and splendor overthrow Antichrist.  2 Thess 2:8

         4) God's Word judges our hearts.                  Heb 4:12


VII. He delivers the earth.

     A. Christians are given relief.                       2 Thess 1:7


     B. Christians dine with Jesus at the wedding feast.   Rev 19:7
