THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE OLD TESTAMENT



  I. The Spirit and Creation.

      A. It hovered like a mother bird over the new earth.  Gen 1:2


      B. It conserves, renews, and withdraws life by a continuous process

            Job 33:4, Ps 33:6, Ps 104:30


      C. In a special way, the Spirit gave life to man.  Gen 2:7


      D. The Spirit is the source of our unique powers:

          1) Human reason                       Job 32:8

          2) Abilities and gifts                Gen 41:38, Exod 28:3

          3) Artistic skill     (Bezalel)       Exod 36

          4) Ability in war     (Joshua)        Deut 34:9

          5) Heroism            (The judges)    Judg 13:25

          6) Wisdom             (Solomon)       1 Kg 3:28

          7) Religious insight  (The prophets)  Num 11:17,25-26,29;

                                                  2 Sam 23:2

          8) Purity                             Neh 9:20; Ps 51:11;

                                                  Isa 63:10; Ezek 36:26;

                                                  Zech 12:10


II. The Saving Work of the Spirit.

      A. It brought about salvation for Israel.

          1) Unknown sons of peasants were stirred up and enabled to

               perform mighty acts of valor.

              a) Judg 3:10; 11:29; 14:6; 1 Sam 11:6


      B. It empowered Israel's leaders.

          1) Kings were anointed for a more lasting function.  1 Sam 16:13

              a) It was a permanent endowment, giving them a sacred

                   character.        1 Sam 26:11

              b) However, it could be taken away.   1 Sam 15:23; 16:14;

                                                    compare Ps 51:11

          2) Prophets and seers were interpreters of God's will.

              a) 2 Sam 23:2; Ezek 2:2; Ezek 3:12,14; Micah 3:8


III. The Messiah is the ultimate possessor of the Spirit.

      A. Kings could be unfaithful and prophets were often ignored.


      B. The Messiah combines the king, prophet and priest.

          1) He receives the gifts of the Spirit in their fullness

              a) Isaiah 11:2; 42:1; 61:1

          2) (Jesus completely fulfills this - John 3:34)


      C. The Spirit and the Age of the Messiah.

          1) The Spirit would be poured out on all flesh.

              a) Like rain on the earth.         Isa 32:15

              b) Like dry bones coming alive.    Ezek 37

          2) The hearts of people would be transformed.

              a) People will be receptive to God's word.  Isa 59:21


IV. The Old Testament did not experience the Age of the Messiah.

      A. They grieved the Holy Spirit.      Isa 63:10


      B. The only hope was for God to come Himself.   Isa 64:1
