Split Level Ruin
is one of the larger ruins in the Grand Gulch system. It is chained
off so you cannot enter the ruin, which is probably a good
thing. The area contains many examples of rock art such as these hand prints. We slept out under the stars. The dirt was soft and quite comfortable.
After several hours of hiking we arrived at Green Mask Spring.
This is one of the richest collections of rock art in the Gulch. The Green Mask (right) is not very large but has an interesting interpretation. A burial in Arizona contained an actual mask that was painted like this - it was fashioned out of a human face. No one knows if was an enemy (better not drink my water!) or a way to honor ancestors. |

The spring itself had plenty of water but it was covered
with a thick algae mat. We filtered it and it still tasted like
water out of your aquarium. Sheiks Canyon had some steep areas we had to negotiate and seemed like it went on forever.
